3 Focus Sectors

Our Focus on Three Sectors

Our focus on Bioeconomy, Future Industries, and Social Innovation is no coincidence. These are sectors where our regions already show strength and where innovation can make the greatest difference for Europe’s future.

Each sector aligns with both regional Smart Specialisation Strategies and the missions of the EIT Knowledge and Innovation Communities, in particular EIT Food and EIT Digital. They reflect Europe’s twin transitions,  green and digital , while supporting inclusive, place-based growth.

1. Bioeconomy

Why this sector?
Our partner institutions are active in bioeconomy education, research and innovation. At a regional level, we work extensively in key areas of:

Agriculture, food and forestry

Natural resources and environmental management

Biotechnology and bio-based industries

Waste and circular economy innovation

Rural development, sustainable regional growth and innovation

Why now?
This focus aligns with EU Green Deal priorities, Smart Specialisation Strategies, and the goals of EIT Food,  making it a powerful platform for long-term regional transformation.

2. Future Industries

Why this sector?
Many RUN-EU partners are located in regions undergoing digital transformation, with expertise in smart manufacturing, AI, robotics, and Industry 5.0.

Where’s the potential?
Future Industries offer innovation pathways in:

Digital manufacturing and automation

Cybersecurity, AI, and the Internet of Things

Workforce upskilling for digital transitions

Why now?
The EU’s Digital Europe Programme and EIT Digital emphasise the need for enhanced digital capabilities across all regions. We aim to close this innovation gap.

3. Social Innovation

Why this sector?
RUN-EU has deep roots in regional development, applied research, and social enterprise. Many of our regions face challenges in inclusion, health, and education that require innovative solutions.

Where’s the potential?
Social Innovation drives:

Socially responsible entrepreneurship

New models to tackle societal challenges e.g. in wellbeing, ageing, and inclusive services

Co-created public services

Why now?

Europe needs innovation that reaches everyone. Social innovation responds to community needs, strengthens cohesion, and ensures that transformation is both fair and inclusive.
